![]() ![]() There are two adjustments that may be performed. Adjustment of tongs may be required after hanging to insure the tongs will be operated in a level position. After the chain loop or eye end of cable has been properly placed inside Tong Line Retainer, securely tighten the tong retainer bolt to insure the chain or cable remains connected to the tong lever. Snub line or cathead line is attached to the Tong Lever Assembly (item 1) by loosening Tong Retainer Bolt (item 3), and opening the Tong Retainer (item 2) to allow the cable or chain to be placed around the tail end of the Lever Assembly. It is recommended the suspension ring be secured using a locking device to help prevent undesired detachment. Manual tongs are easily installed by connecting suspended cable, with counter balances on opposite ends, to the Hanger Suspension Ring (item 11). Improper use or over-torquing of tongs, incorrect selection of latch lug jaw, incorrect selection of latch lug jaw hinge pin hole or utilizing incorrect latch lug jaw step, may cause injuries to personnel, tubulars, and/or tongs.įigure 2.A.1 – Tong Assembly National Oilwell manual tongs are designed for quick installation and simple operation. Tongs should never be used in excess of their rated torque capacity. Tongs should only be utilized with a straight and even tong pull-line at a 90º pullangle. ![]() Proper latch lug jaw size should be determined based upon the tubular’s outside diameter gripping surface. ![]() Manual tongs should be carefully selected based upon the tubular tool joints torque ratings, which the tongs are to be used.
